How connecting with Jesus at every stage of emotional development can bring deep, lasting healing.
A reader recently posed a beautiful and thoughtful question, something along these lines:
“Do you have any input on how we express and experience emotions differently depending on our level of maturity? For example: an infant cries and feels helpless without care. A child learns to wait and begins to take some responsibility. An adult manages their own emotions while still being present to others in pain.”
What a rich question.
The answer is yes, and it opens a wonderful doorway into emotional healing with Jesus as our guide.
I recommend the research on the levels of maturity and THEN interacting with Jesus on each stage of your life.
It can look like this…
1. The pathway of each stage of life is wonderfully expressed in the book: ‘Living from the Heart Jesus Gave You‘ by Dr Jim Wilder and colleagues. This is a good place to start for overall understanding. There is a chapter dedicated to the concept of maturity and how we express each stage of maturity depending on our emotional health.
2. Next, what I then further love to do is to ask Jesus:
“Jesus, what do you want to say to that child part inside me that feels…. (name the feeling)?”
OR:
“Jesus, what do you want to say to that …infant part, child part, teen part, adult part … of me…?”
Journal what comes.
Don’t kink the hose, as I love to say… (Don’t second guess it.)
Invite Holy Spirit to come into that timeline of your life to heal and deposit all the love, joy, peace… that was lacking from parents and family.
It’s a beautiful journey of emotional healing with Jesus, our Healer!
This journey is not rushed or forced, but tender and personal. Jesus meets us exactly where we are in our story, and He is our Healer.
