Finding purpose isn’t about striving or carving your path harder — it’s about surrendering to the One who shapes you.
I recently came across a thoughtful article written by a woman reflecting on how she discovered her calling. It was honest, vulnerable, and deeply relatable. She described the quiet disorientation of her early 30s — a full household, tight finances, a crisis of identity — and the tension of wondering whether she was too much or simply not enough.
She prayed for a blueprint. Instead, she received a whisper: carve out your life. So she got intentional. She experimented, connected with others, failed often, and grew through it all. Now in her 50s and entering a brand new season, she finds herself standing before another unmolded lump of clay — ready to start carving again.
It’s a compelling picture of resilience and courage. But as I read it, one thing kept standing out to me…
There was no mention of relationship with the Potter.
(I’m hoping this was simply assumed but, I would have loved to hear about her relationship with the Potter and hearing the identity HE gives her.)
The Blueprint We’re Really Looking For
So many of us approach calling — searching for a roadmap, waiting for clarity, hustling to make something meaningful out of the raw material of our lives. And while intentionality and courage absolutely matter, there’s a foundational piece that changes everything:
Our calling doesn’t begin with us. It begins with Him.
The image of clay being shaped isn’t just a helpful metaphor — it’s a biblical truth:
“We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.” — Isaiah 64:8
We are not the ones holding the tools. We are the ones being held.
Abiding Before Striving
In John 15, Jesus gives us one of the clearest pictures of how calling actually works. He doesn’t say go build something great. He says abide in me. Stay close. Remain. And from that place of deep connection, fruit comes — naturally, sustainably, and in ways that outlast our own efforts.
This reframes everything about how we pursue purpose:
Instead of chasing gifts or platforms, we fix our gaze fully on God and trust Him to surface what He’s placed in us.
Instead of waiting for others to recognize our potential, we say yes to God first — and watch Him build what needs to be built.
Instead of striving for clarity, we receive it progressively, as He brings healing, revelation, and alignment in His time.
He places the right people around us. He brings forth fruit through us. Everything that flows out of us is a result of how deeply we’re rooted in Him.
Your Calling Is Already Secure
Here’s something worth resting in today: your gifts are irrevocable (Romans 11:29). Your calling is not in jeopardy. You don’t have to earn it, manufacture it, or force it into existence.
What you are invited into is deeper intimacy — going into the heart of God and finding your purpose waiting there. The clearest path to calling isn’t more hustle. It’s more abiding.
So before you pick up your tools and start carving — spend time with the Potter first.
