Healing the Heart: Breaking Unhealthy Patterns by Uncovering the Lies We Believe
In our walk with God, it’s easy to see certain struggles or habits as isolated behaviors we just need to “fix.” But what if there’s more beneath the surface? What if each unhealthy behavior, each self-sabotaging pattern, is actually a signal—our heart’s way of telling us there’s a deeper wound needing God’s healing touch?
✨ “Behind every unhealthy behavior is a lie believed and a heart wound needing to be healed.”
Understanding the Root Cause
The truth is, our patterns often stem from pain we’ve buried and lies we’ve unknowingly accepted. Instead of seeing our struggles as isolated, we can ask God to reveal the origin. Is it fear, rejection, shame, or some belief we’ve come to hold onto?
The Importance of Renewing the Mind
Romans 12:2 tells us, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” This verse reminds us that true transformation starts not just with behavior modification but with a complete renewal of our thought patterns.
Sometimes we fall into certain behaviors because, deep down, we’re trying to numb or avoid a wound that hasn’t healed. For example, fear of failure can drive us to perfectionism, or past rejection might lead to a desire for constant approval. These behaviors stem from lies we’ve believed, like “I’m only as good as what I accomplish,” or “If I’m not loved by everyone, I’m unworthy.”
Recognizing Lies and Heart Wounds
In John 8:32, Jesus says, “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” God’s desire is for us to be free—free from lies and free from the chains of past pain. When we invite Him to uncover the lies in our hearts, He gently brings them to light, allowing His truth to replace them.
Consider the woman at the well (John 4). She came seeking water, but Jesus knew she was thirsting for something much deeper—love, acceptance, healing. By speaking to her heart wounds, He invited her into freedom. Her encounter with Jesus transformed her; He didn’t just give her answers, He gave her healing.
Steps Toward Heart Healing with Jesus
- Ask Jesus to Reveal the Lie Behind the Behavior
Invite Jesus to help you identify any lies you may be believing. He might reveal something as simple as, “I’m not enough” or “I’ll always be alone.” Whatever He brings to mind, trust that it’s an area He wants to heal. - Seek His Truth Over the Lie
For every lie, God has a powerful truth waiting to set you free. For example, if you struggle with feeling “not enough,” remember that you are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). His truth dispels lies, bringing peace and clarity. - Allow Jesus to Heal Heart Wounds
Psalm 147:3 says, “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Jesus doesn’t just address the surface; He goes right to the core. By giving Him access to our hidden wounds, we allow Him to work deeply within us, restoring every broken place. - Pray for a Renewed Mindset
Ask the Holy Spirit to help renew your mind daily, transforming old thought patterns and aligning your perspective with God’s. As we fill our minds with Scripture, His truth becomes the foundation of our thoughts, affecting our behaviors and decisions. - Stay Rooted in Community and Accountability
Healing is a journey best taken in community. Having people who pray with you, speak truth to you, and encourage you along the way is invaluable. Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” This is one reason the Freedom Coaching Circle for women began.
Embracing the Healing Journey
Uncovering lies and seeking healing may feel daunting, but know that you’re not alone in this journey. God desires for you to be free, and He’s not only walking with you—He’s leading you. Our job is to lean in, listen to His gentle voice, and respond in faith.
If you’re ready to take that next step, invite Him in. Let Him reveal the hidden things in your heart and mind, and trust Him to bring healing and restoration. As you align with His truth, the chains of unhealthy patterns will begin to break, and you’ll experience the freedom Jesus promises.
Remember, freedom is a journey. Let His love guide you every step of the way.
