Treasures on the Water: What Do You See?

The other morning on a weekend, gifted to me by my husband’s suggestion to enjoy the weather, I sat quietly on a dock overlooking a still lake. The mountains stretched high above me, and the water looked like glass. Sailboats rested in the distance. Treasure hunters combed the beach with metal detectors, hoping to find something of value in what others had left behind.

And then, as often happens when I slow down enough to listen, I felt the Lord whisper:

“What do you see?”

Hunting for Treasure

I began to describe what I saw.
“Lord, I see mountains and a lake that looks like glass. I see sailboats. I see treasure hunters on the beach.”

Then I sensed His gentle reply:
“Some people hunt for treasure in things other people leave behind. But I want you to look up and out. What do you see?”

So I lifted my eyes.

“I see a vast expanse,” I told Him.
“An open horizon, endless trees, and majestic mountains.”

And again, I sensed His voice:
“My treasures for you are up and out—ready for you to explore and discover more.”

I got the message. It was to look for more from Him.

Learning to Move With the Wind

As I watched the sailboats, I noticed something fascinating.
Some were gliding effortlessly, moving in rhythm with the breeze.
Others sat still, without direction.
While others struggled to go against the wind.

And in that moment, I heard the Lord say again:
“Pay attention to the direction of My Holy Spirit wind. Keep moving with Me. Keep watching how I move.”

Reflections on His Wind

I couldn’t help but think of what Jesus said to Nicodemus:

“The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going.
So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”
— John 3:8 NIV

The Holy Spirit is like that wind—unpredictable, yet purposeful.
We can’t control Him, but we can learn to move with Him.

When we resist His leading, we become like the sailboats stuck in place—trying to push against the very current meant to carry us forward. But when we align ourselves with His flow, grace fills our sails, and we move freely in His rhythm.

Listening Prayer

You might want to take a moment and ask Jesus for yourself:

  • Lord, what do YOU want me to see in my world around me today?
  • Where am I searching for treasure in the wrong place?
  • How are You moving right now—and how can I move with You?
  • What does it look like to set my sails in the direction of Your Spirit?

Pause. Listen. Breathe.
Let Him bring the imagery, words, or feelings that help you recognize His movement in your own life.

Closing Thought

There are treasures waiting for you—not buried in the past, not hidden in what others have left behind, but from above in the heavens.

“Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.” – Jeremiah 33:3 NKJV

“Ask me and I will tell you remarkable secrets you do not know about things to come.” – Jeremiah 33:3 NLT

Lift your eyes.
Pay attention to His wind.
The Spirit is moving—and He’s inviting you to sail with Him into something new.

“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.”
— Isaiah 60:1 NIV
