When I first started meeting with people to coach them in one-on-one sessions, I soon found myself thinking, instead of merely asking them coaching questions to draw out the gold, it would go so much faster if I coached them to hear God’s voice. I quickly found myself serving my clients by first teaching them to hear the ultimate Life Coach.
I led them to understand 1 Thessalonians 5:19-21:
“Do not quench the Spirit. Do not treat prophecies (hearing God’s voice) with
contempt but test them all; hold on to what is good.”
(Combined paraphrase version of NIV and NLT)
I explained that it was like turning the water hose on in our back yard to fill up a bucket. We don’t kink the hose wondering if it’s good water or not, but we allow it to flow and then look in the bucket and test the water. We test what comes out according to God’s Word and the fruit of the Holy Spirit, and we keep what is good.
As I began to lead people in sessions, Jesus showed us behind the curtain what was happening in the spiritual realm beyond the natural, and how to pray into situations and even relationships. My mind was blown. The lives of my clients were transformed. A new supernatural acceleration happened before my eyes daily.
One of my first clients was going through deep grief and was referred to me through the front office of the Care Centre. I remember driving to the office praying for her and for Jesus to lead the session. He assured me that He would indeed lead. What happened would forever transform her faith and mine in hearing God. I invited her to ask Jesus for Scripture to confirm what she was hearing from Him. She opened her eyes and confessed that she didn’t really know God’s Word very well.
I remember telling her, “It’s okay. He knows the Bible better than us. He may simply give you a reference.”
I couldn’t believe I said that, and she looked at me like I was nuts.
She closed her eyes and asked the Lord for Scripture to confirm what she sensed Him telling her. Soon, she did indeed hear a passage reference. I asked her if she knew what it was. “No,” she said. I handed her my Bible, and she looked it up. Tears streamed down her face as she read it to me aloud.
We both were in amazement. What she read was exactly what the Lord was showing her. My heart did somersaults. She felt deeply that the Lord heard her heart and saw her situation.
This woman is in a completely different place today. In fact, she now very publicly tells her story with others of all the Lord has done for her and leads others to encounter His heart for them, as a result of learning to hear God herself.
