We’ve all heard the saying, “Good things come to those who wait.” But what does that really mean, especially when we’re in a season of waiting that feels endless, uncertain, or even painful? Many of us might assume it’s just about sitting tight and hoping for the best, but God offers us a deeper, more powerful perspective on waiting.
Waiting on God: More Than Just Passing Time
Isaiah 30:18 (NLT) beautifully captures the essence of what it truly means to wait:
“So the Lord must wait for you to come to him
so he can show you his love and compassion.
For the Lord is a faithful God.
Blessed are those who wait for his help.”
This verse flips the script on the traditional idea of waiting. It’s not about passivity or simply enduring time. It’s about positioning ourselves to receive God’s love and compassion actively. God is not only waiting to bless us; He’s waiting for us to come to Him so He can show us who He really is—faithful, loving, and full of mercy.
The Blessing in the Waiting
We often think of waiting as something we must endure until we get what we want. But Isaiah reminds us that the real blessing isn’t just in receiving the answer to our prayers; it’s in the waiting process itself. Why? Because it’s in this place of waiting that we learn to lean on God, to trust in His timing, and to rest in His presence.
- Waiting builds trust. In our human nature, we like to be in control. But waiting teaches us to release our grip and trust God’s perfect plan. It’s an invitation to grow deeper in faith, knowing that His timing is always best, even when it doesn’t align with our own.
- Waiting reveals God’s character. In the waiting, we get to know God as a loving Father who cares deeply about every detail of our lives. He’s not indifferent to our struggles or delays. Instead, He uses these moments to show us His love and compassion.
- Waiting draws us closer to Him. Often, it’s in seasons of waiting that we pray more earnestly, seek His guidance more diligently, and experience His presence more profoundly. The waiting isn’t wasted—it’s a sacred space where we encounter God in ways we never would have otherwise.
Active Waiting: Seeking God First
The beauty of Isaiah 30:18 is that it reminds us that God is waiting too—waiting for us to come to Him. This isn’t a call to wait passively but to engage with God during our waiting season. Here are some ways to do that:
- Pray intentionally. Use this time to connect with God in deeper prayer. Ask Him to reveal His will and to shape your heart according to His plans.
- Study His Word. The Bible is filled with stories of people who had to wait on God—Abraham, Joseph, David, and so many others. Let their stories encourage you and remind you that God is always working, even in the waiting.
- Worship while you wait. Worship is a powerful way to keep your heart aligned with God’s heart. It shifts your focus from what you lack to who God is.
- Serve others. Sometimes, the best way to deal with your own waiting season is to bless others. Look with the Lord’s leading for ways to serve and be a light in someone else’s journey.
Blessed Are Those Who Wait for His Help
Waiting is hard, especially when it feels like everyone else is moving forward while you’re stuck. But take heart in this truth: God is with you in the waiting. He’s not punishing you, delaying you, or ignoring you. He’s preparing you. And He’s preparing something beautiful for you.
As you wait on the Lord, He promises to show up with love and compassion. So don’t just wait around; wait on Him. Turn your waiting into worship, your delays into devotion, and your pauses into praise. In God’s perfect timing, you’ll see that He’s been working all along.
Remember, blessed are those who wait for His help. God’s got you, and He’s faithful to fulfill every promise. Keep trusting, keep believing, and keep waiting on the Lord. Your blessing is on the way.
